There is a weight towards its percussion: the drums leave a lot of room. They have a modest level, with the peaks a long way clear of the ceiling. That leaves a treble that carries a lot of the cut. If it is a track with a narrative, it is one that builds through its arrangement rather than the mixdown. The drums are the first thing to hit the ear. They are less direct in the mix than a lot of techno, and it allows the track to lean on its percussion. Kolsch's records often get described as soundtrack-like, and that is the case here. The track does not need the full range of the mix to land its effect, and the restraint is what does it.
